"There simply isn't enough human capital to sustain the jobs that need doing," LaMoreaux stated at SXSW. "With plummeting birth rates, AI may be the only viable solution for plugging critical skills gaps."
Rather than fixating on feared job losses, she believes the focus should be strategizing for "job change" - leveraging AI to augment human capabilities for greater productivity and impact.
The AI Career Accelerant
Far from being displaced, LaMoreaux sees AI as a career accelerant, especially for early talents. "Instead of grinding through transactional tasks, new hires can use AI tools to rapidly build expertise for higher-value work," she explained.
This "short-circuiting" of the learning curve could boost engagement and retention as employees unlock opportunities to contribute more meaningfully from day one. Roles and responsibilities will inevitably shift, but Human+AI collaboration creates new upsides.
At IBM, generative AI is already streamlining HR workflows while serving as the initial touchpoint for its 250,000 global employees. "We have a strict policy that AI recommendations never make final decisions, only augment the human decision-maker," she added. "Especially for talent processes, we're hyper-vigilant about factors like degree bias creeping in versus our skills-first hiring philosophy."
