Bridging the Generational Skills Gap: How Employers Can Unlock Gen Z’s Potential

November 12, 20242 min read

As artificial intelligence reshapes the workplace, employers are placing a premium on “human-centric skills.” According to a recent report by talent experience platform Cornerstone, skills like responsibility, communication, and interpersonal collaboration are in high demand. From 2019 to 2024, 52% of global job postings have listed “demonstrating responsibility” as a requirement, followed by 33% for “communication” and 27% for “interpersonal collaboration.”

However, these essential skills appear to be Gen Z’s weakest areas. The report shows that only 11% of Gen Z applicants highlight responsibility in their job profiles, 12% mention communication, and a mere 7% showcase interpersonal collaboration. By contrast, older generations show higher proficiency in these areas, underscoring a generational skills gap.

“It’s not surprising,” says Carina Cortez, Chief People Officer at Cornerstone. “Many Gen Z workers entered the workforce during the pandemic, stepping into remote-first environments where opportunities to develop human-centered skills were limited.”

Older workers have had the advantage of more in-person experiences, which naturally foster communication and collaboration. But the good news? Gen Z’s potential is untapped, and with the right strategies, employers can help them develop these critical skills.

Closing the Gap with Learning Opportunities

Cortez emphasizes the importance of tailored learning experiences. “Employers should leverage immersive technologies like augmented and virtual reality to help Gen Z workers build these skills in a way that resonates with their learning preferences,” she suggests.

She also highlights the role of clear communication and expectations. “HR teams and managers must ensure employees understand these evolving skill requirements. Set clear expectations from the beginning and offer ample opportunities for training.”

Ultimately, technology can enhance learning, but it’s the human connection—through candid conversations and structured feedback—that truly bridges the gap. By investing in Gen Z’s growth, organizations can create a more balanced, future-ready workforce.

Takeaway for Employers: The generational skills gap is an opportunity, not a roadblock. With the right support, Gen Z can thrive in the modern workplace, bringing innovation and fresh perspectives to the table.
